Metal One has been stepping up efforts related to carbon neutrality.
To seize the business opportunities the worldwide decarbonization trend presents,
we are focusing on selling the “green” steel that various steel manufacturers
produce and proactively expanding operations in renewable energy
and circular economy sectors such as offshore wind-power generation.
Intent on meeting the goals of halving greenhouse gases the Group emits
by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050,
we’ve been promoting various initiatives designed to cut emissions,
including adopting internal carbon pricing.
We are promoting carbon neutrality and reducing greenhouse gases
as we pursue innovation and new business opportunities.

Transformation
Focusing on carbon neutrality
as we pursue innovation and new business opportunities
After launching our Green Transformation Office in 2023 as the organization to oversee our drive to achieve carbon neutrality pursuing innovation and new business opportunities, we’ve been looking into the feasibility of businesses in three areas: green steel, renewable energy, and the circular economy. Using the wide-ranging resources that the Metal One Group has developed over many years of steel product distribution, we’ve been working on various initiatives to help achieve carbon neutrality. For example, we formed a business partnership with American decarbonization engineering firm Clean Energy Systems, Inc. (CES) in 2023. We are rolling out the company’s proprietary oxygen combustion technology—which uses emissions from steel plants and other sources as energy—in the global steel industry. Additionally, we are demonstrating our overall capabilities to handle everything from supplying a whole range of steel materials to construction related to offshore wind-power generation that is under development in Japan’s coastal waters.

Two goals: a 50 percent cut in emissions by FY2030 and net zero by FY2050

NET ZERO
Striving for carbon neutrality to reduce greenhouse gases
Recognizing that climate change issues are urgent challenges that confront all kinds of industries and companies—as well as people and their lifestyles—Metal One has set the goals of halving the Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gases the Group emits by FY2030 (compared to FY2020) and achieving net zero by FY2050.
Establishing the Net-Zero CO2 Emissions Strategy Office in 2023 to handle carbon neutrality issues and initiatives, with a focus on reducing greenhouse gases, we have built an organization to manage and promote unified efforts to deal with the greenhouse gases the Metal One Group emits and climate change overall. Adopting internal carbon pricing as a way to promote these efforts, we are evaluating the impact on operations as well as seeking investments targeted at cutting emissions by quantifying CO2 emissions costs based on carbon neutrality scenarios. Additionally, we have endorsed the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures, an international framework for climate risk disclosures, and strive to disclose timely information on our efforts.
