Mr. Kiba delivered the letters of commendation to the presidents of the three companies.

Under the Metal One Group Management Award program newly instituted in fiscal 2010, three member companies—Nifast Corporation (United States), Nicometal Mexicana, S.A. de C.V. (Mexico), and Metal One Canada Corporation (Canada)—have received the awards.

This system is intended to strengthen staff members' group management awareness and motivation by showing appreciation of and rewarding not the individual at the top-management level but the corporate organization for making particularly significant contributions to the achievement of the Mid-Term Consolidated Management Plan. Metal One will recognize consolidated business investment affiliates that make such contributions with a view to helping successfully carry out group management. The COO of each division proposes a candidate company and gives the reason for commendation, and the proposal goes through the Human Resources Advisory Committee to the Executive Committee, which makes the final decision.

The three Group members in North America that were selected for the awards this year were highly evaluated mainly for their steady and continuous implementation of survival strategies through active efforts to strengthen the risk management setup, reduce costs, and so forth.

Managing executive officer Terumitsu Kiba directly delivered the letters of commendation, together with commemorative gifts, to the three awardee companies in November 2010.

First Speaker from a Foreign-Funded Company to Be Invited

Mr. Sakaguchi giving a lecture

The Fifth China Steel Trade Fair sponsored by the China Metal Material Trade Association was held in Nanjing from October 20 through 22, 2010, and Metal One's managing executive officer Naomi Sakaguchi (chief regional officer [China]) was the first speaker from a foreign-funded company ever invited to give a lecture. For approximately one hour, Mr. Sakaguchi spoke about the steel distribution situation in Japan and explained how Metal One is acting in this market. He told the audience of 400 people of the surprisingly close resemblance that Japan's apparent steel consumption and numbers of automobiles owned per unit of population in the years of the Tokyo Olympics (1964) and Expo '70 in Osaka (1970) had with those of China in the years of the Beijing Olympics and Expo 2010 Shanghai China, respectively, some 40 years later. Taking this as an example, he pointed out that, thinking of Japan's steady growth in the succeeding years, there seems to be still great potential for growth in steel-related demand in China. Mr. Sakaguchi added that Metal One wants to strengthen its presence in the Chinese market to benefit from this expected growth while cooperating with its Chinese partners. The China Metal Material Trade Association is the biggest steel distribution association in China, and the recent lecture by Mr. Sakaguchi was arranged at the request and recommendation of China Minmetals Corporation, one of Metal One's partners in China. After the lecture, Mr. Sakaguchi was approached by the China Iron and Steel Association and many other companies and organizations, reflecting the strong impression that his lecture had on the audience.
