A "Multi-Steel Service Center" Capable of Processing Diverse Types of Sheet and Plate

Greeting its eightieth anniversary as counted from the founding of its predecessor Suzuki Tetsu-ten, Suzuyasu Corporation is well known throughout eastern Japan as a long-established steel service center. Its fellow traders comprise Suzuyasu's second-biggest source of business, second only to its automotive sector customers. Despite being primarily a steel service center, the company also offers wholesaling services, keeping in stock and selling angle bar, channel bar, and other bar steel.

Seizing the opportunity to come under the wing of Metal One Service Center Holdings Corporation (MOSHD) in 2010 together with Isuzu Corporation, Suzuyasu reformed itself in quick succession by introducing a geographical block setup—consisting of northern, central, and western blocks—and integrating or closing down some business bases and withdrawing from the bar steel processing business, among others.

President Hajime Kuroda, who took office in 2011, emphasizes the advantages of joining the MOSHD group, saying: "Our entrance into the MOSHD group has stimulated our interactions with Isuzu and other steel service centers in the group. We have reaped very big benefits in the aspects of plant operation and safety and human resource development—too big for us to have achieved by ourselves."

What is positioned as the top priority issue under the Mid-term Management Plan (for 2012–14) formulated last year is the introduction of the new trunk system Tetsu One. This is an improved version of Isuzu's ATOM to meet Suzuyasu's particular requirements, and is scheduled to become operational in January 2014. "Its full operation can be expected to enhance our business efficiency significantly," says President Kuroda.

Another area on which active efforts are concentrated to expand the range of items processed is work on specialty steel. Three years ago the company's Saitama Branch started receiving orders for such steel processing from Metal One Specialty Steel Corporation and other companies, and this capability is planned for expansion to involve the Tochigi Branch, Shizuoka Branch, and Nagano Office. The aim is to equip Suzuyasu with diverse functions as a "multi-steel service center" capable of meeting processing needs for a wide variety of steel sheet and plate ranging from ordinary steel to stainless and specialty steel.

The company also started a workplace improvement campaign last year, with the leading role played by small groups. The Tochigi Branch—launched by integrating the Oyama Plant, Kanuma Plant, and Oyama Branch—is committed to this campaign, recognizing it as a companywide project, with the cooperation of ITC Corporation. The result was a success in increasing the monthly processing capacity to 10,000 tonnes from the old Oyama Plant's 7,500 tonnes. This was achieved by modifying the plant layout and introducing unmanned conveyance carts, among other contrivances, without expanding the factory site of the old Oyama Plant.

Furthermore, the Shizuoka Branch undertook environmental improvements to make specialty steel processing possible, and as a result of thoroughly implementing "5S" efforts (related to tidiness, order, cleaning, cleanliness, and discipline) among others, the branch achieved a favorable reputation from manufacturers and users, who say the worksite has become so clean that it looked like a totally different place from a year ago.

Many of the company's successful reforms were made possible by joining the MOSHD group, and Suzuyasu intends to further strengthen its endeavors in this direction as the spearhead of group management.
