Colored Sheet Processor in Hokkaido Celebrating Its Thirtieth Anniversary

Obiko Corporation—celebrating its thirtieth anniversary in 2015—has a large trade volume that makes it among the top colored sheet processing companies in Hokkaido.

The company was founded in 1985 as a secondary wholesaler under the name Obihiro Kogyo, Ltd. through a joint investment by Nissho Iwai Corporation (now Sojitz Corporation) and local general contractors. In 1996, Obiko diversified into the processing and forming of colored sheets. In 2010, its business model was shifted to specializing in the processing of colored sheets and its production bases were consolidated in Ishikari City, where the company's head office is located. Obiko further expanded its business by acquiring a subsidiary of Hokkai Koki Co., Ltd., which was the only colored sheet manufacturer in Hokkaido.

Colored sheets are galvanized sheets or galvalume sheets coated with various colors, which are used mainly as materials for the roofs and walls of homes and factories. In Hokkaido—where there is a lot of accumulated snow and blizzards—the demand for colored sheets is higher than in other areas.

The company has twenty-one forming machines and two slitters for colored sheets, and handles the forming process of colored sheets of various sizes and shapes that are used as materials for roofs and walls. The current annual amount handled is about six thousand tonnes, which places the company among the big three of such processors in Hokkaido. .

Since 1999, Obiko has been collaborating with Sanko Metal Industrial Co., Ltd.—a major metal roof manufacturer—to process roof and wall materials for use in large projects in Hokkaido under commission from Sanko. Major projects include the Sapporo Dome and the tunnel shelter for Japan Railways' Hokkaido Shinkansen, which is currently under construction. Additionally in 2013, Obiko and Hokkai Koki jointly developed Galwave—a roofing material excelling in aesthetic design. The key feature of Galwave is its irregular shape, and the product is generating new demand for use in hotels and office buildings.

Obiko President Shingo Hamada—who concurrently serves as the general manager of Metal One's Hokkaido Branch and president of Metal One Hokkaido Corporation—says: "Processing of colored sheets serves a niche market, but it is a high value-added business model. Since tourists visiting Hokkaido from overseas are rapidly increasing, an increase in hotel construction needs is expected. We would like to expand our business in close teamwork with Metal One Hokkaido."

Many of Obiko's clients are secondary wholesalers or sheet metal dealers in Hokkaido. With the aim of strengthening ties with these trade partners, Obiko and Metal One Hokkaido jointly launched a friendship club for secondary wholesalers named "Color Gathering." A meeting inviting about sixty-five sheet metal dealers was also held to increase sales capabilities.

As a means to strengthen unity within the company, events such as the company trip to Okinawa in February to commemorate the company's thirtieth anniversary were also organized. The company devotes efforts to ensuring safety as well, and is expected to reach 1,500 days without an accident this July.
