Pipe and Plumbing Product Professionals That Provide Broad, Quick Distribution

Metal One Pipe & Tubular Products Inc. is a platform company that handles a full lineup of pipe and plumbing products in Japan. The company was formed through an April 2011 restructuring of Otofuji Corporation and the pipe and plumbing product operations of Metal One's business offices (in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka), along with part of the trading operations of Metal One Tubular Products Inc. The company provides a core function, and its business lines have been expanded to create a major trading company specializing in pipe and plumbing products. Its approximately ¥65 billion in sales place it in the top three in the industry.

Regarding the aims for establishing the new company, President Taro Akasaka relates: "We want to increase our capabilities by achieving broad and quick distribution that covers everything from upstream to downstream, and be a cost-competitive, overpowering presence."

The company warehouses, processes, and distributes a broad range of products, from pipes to valves, joints, and other plumbing products. What really sets it apart, however, is its network of 24 branches and sales offices and 11 distribution centers nationwide, from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The company also offers comprehensive services to a wide spectrum of end users in the petrochemical, shipbuilding, machinery, civil engineering and construction, electric power, gas, and other sectors based on this network of locations, with close connections to each region. Handling a diverse lineup of products, it does business with some 2,500 corporate customers. "Our company is the only one in the Metal One Group that has this much infrastructure and handles this many customers. We want to burnish those strengths," Mr. Akasaka says.

The new company has made "plus one" its management policy and set five objectives: expand its strengths; widen its business field; increase each employee's scope of business; promote corporate management in which the top, middle, and lower tiers work together; and pursue corporate social responsibility. Among these objectives, it will work to create value chains by broadening its existing range of capabilities, areas, and products under the policy of widening its business field. For example, the company will develop sales overseas and in new markets, and expand its product lineup to supply whatever products customers require, making good use of the Metal One Group's procurement capabilities. There are already thriving joint operations with Group affiliates such as Metal One Specialty Steel Corporation; Seikoh Co., Ltd.; and Tamatsukuri Corporation (Osaka), and introductions to mutual business partners that take place are already producing results.

The company is currently drafting a mid-term management plan that will commence in fiscal 2012, and plans to boost profits through growth and survival strategies. Mr. Akasaka points out: "Our aim over the medium to long term is to become the industry leader, with ¥100 billion in sales volume and ¥1 billion in post-tax earnings," adding that "customers value our employees' extremely serious style of working and our high degree of specialization. My role is to ensure that everyone is on the same page and doing whatever it takes to make this a good company."
