Metal One Ryowa Corporation
From Value One Summer 2012 No.37
Our Strengths and Distinctive Qualities
A pioneering business model that fuses steel service center functions and trading company capabilities
One of Japan's largest service centers, able to process 300,000 tonnes per year
Operates a supply chain in Mizushima, one of Japan's leading industrial areas
A New Type of Service Center with Integrated Trading Company Capabilities

The Mizushima coastal industrial zone where Metal One Ryowa Corporation is located is known as one of Japan's leading industrial complexes. Along with the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's Mizushima Plant, the factory cluster includes JFE Steel Corporation; Tokyo Steel Co., Ltd.; Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation; and JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation facilities.

Formed through the merger of the former Ryowa Steel Corporation and Metal One's Mizushima Office in 2006, Metal One Ryowa is an integrated service center, possessing both service center and trading company capabilities. It has attracted industry attention for its pioneering and unusual business model.

The company boasts approximately 300,000 tonnes in annual processing capacity at a single service center, making it one of Japan's largest. Together with Group affiliate Mizushima Metal Products Corporation, which handles blanking, the company primarily supplies steel sheets to Mitsubishi Motors and its parts manufacturers. It has also diversified operations, turning its hand to cutting automotive pipe from 2005.

Mr. Kiyoshi Takahira, who became president in 2009, says: "Our company is the only one in Japan in the automotive sheet business that has integrated service center and trading operations. I hope that the 'Mizushima model'—in which we handle centralized purchasing work to back up components manufacturers who have complicated materials orders while adhering to Mitsubishi Motors' production plans—will be a good one for the Metal One Group."

In Mizushima, one of Japan's leading industrial zones, a supply chain has been devised for one-stop supplying of sheets going from steel manufacturers via Metal One Ryowa to car and parts manufacturers. Affiliates such as Metal One Structural Steel & Resource Corporation, Metal One Specialty Steel Corporation, and MOBY Corporation also have offices in the company's building. A system has been set up to quickly supply not only steel sheets, but also structural or specialty steel, drum cans, and other steel products.

The company began installing the latest facilities in succession early on, including a system that uses IC tags to manage raw materials storage and retrieval, an automated blade fitting device, and automated coil racks that are 12 meters tall. The upgraded system, G-MORIS, began operation last year, helping the plant achieve even higher production efficiency.

Moreover, the company has actively been posting personnel to Metal One service centers overseas for some time. Technical advisors are currently on assignment to MC Metal Service Asia (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in Thailand, helping to upgrade the Group's overall capabilities.
