A Team of Steel Pipe Trade Specialists

Established in 2004, Metal One Tubular Products Inc. is run by a professional team specializing in the export and offshore trading of steel pipes, including line pipes and specialty tubes. The team is divided by product line into three subgroups focusing on line pipes, specialty tubes and waterworks-related pipes. In FY2013, the company handled about ninety thousand tonnes of steel products in total.

The line pipe subgroup handles line pipes used to connect oil fields to refineries or other downstream facilities, conductor casings used as shells to shield oil well pipes in drilling work, and tubular products for plants. Metal One Tubular is especially strong in North America in conductor casings, where they have about a 30 percent market share.

As their name suggests, specialty tubes are steel pipes for diverse special purposes, including boiler tubes and heat exchangers in power generation stations, alloyed steel pipes for various plants, and high-tensile mechanical structure pipes. While the business focuses on retail sales to oil refineries and chemical and power plants in North America and Southeast Asia, it is also developing new sectors such as IT.

The waterworks-related pipe subgroup holds the largest share—over 50 percent—in the export of cast-iron pipes made by the Kubota Corporation for city water and sewerage systems. These products are mainly used in waterworks projects in Kuwait and Europe.

President Takao Hirano, in his second term as Metal One Tubular's head (he also served in that capacity in 2011–12), positions his company as a professional team specializing in high-value-added products that require expert knowledge. "While the Energy Project International Business Department mainly aims for big projects undertaken by end users," he says, "we have a strength in retail to wholesalers who are very influential in the worldwide energy industry."

As an efficient subsidiary of Metal One, Metal One Tubular Products proactively collaborates with other group members both in Japan and abroad. One such partner is MC Tubular Products, Inc. in Houston, Texas, which works with Metal One Tubular Products on inventory sales of line pipes and stainless steel specialty tubes. A Metal One Tubular Products staff member has been seconded from Japan to MC Tubular Products to foster greater expansion of trading rights. Another related attempt is to promote package sales of specialty tubes together with plates and construction steel in cooperation with Metal One America, Inc. and MC Tubular Products, targeting liquefied natural gas projects in North America. Additionally, Metal One Specialty Steel Corporation is a partner in specialty tube exports to Korean steel pipe manufacturers.

"We would like to make even greater use of Metal One's network and enter into strategic tie-ups with major fabricators and wholesalers overseas," says President Hirano. Although the company is doing business in niche markets, President Hirano is seeking to utilize the strength of his professional team as the company meets the challenges of achieving an even higher rank in the business.
