Core Sales Company Dealing in Wire Rod Products

Metal One Steel Products Corporation was set up in 2004 by integrating the former NIK Metal Corporation and the former NI Steel Products Co., Ltd. In its early days, the company also handled steel scrap, ordinary steel and stainless steel, but today it has established a unique and impressive presence in the industry as a steel trading company mainly focusing on wire rod products.

The wire rod sector covers a wide variety of products ranging from basic wire rods to secondary wire rod products obtained by drawing them (such as CH steel wires) and tertiary wire rod products resulting from further work on them, including fasteners and wire meshes. Metal One Steel Products is a core sales organization in the Metal One Group, dealing with all categories of wire rod products.

President Saburo Ito, who took office in 2013, says: "In my second year at Nissho Iwai, I had a part in the launching of NIK Metal Corporation, set up Nifast Canada Corporation in 1989, helped establish Nifast India Private Ltd. in 2007, and was the supervising general manager in Osaka. This is a company particularly dear to me."

The role of a trading company in the wire rod sector is characterized by a business model of maximizing value by selling wire rods to wire drawers and also selling the secondary and tertiary products that wire drawers processed. "By steadily selling wire rod products, we contribute to the success of Metal One's own wire rod business," says President Ito. The company is contributing to the buildup of the wire rod value chain in close cooperation with secondary wire rod product manufacturers in the group in which Metal One has capital stakes, such as Sunrock Oyodo Co., Ltd. and Shinsei Kogyo Co., Ltd.

The demand for wire rod products comes from diverse areas—including civil engineering, construction, automobile and motorcycle manufacturing, electrical household appliance and general machinery production—and the company has about 1,600 domestic clients in these industries. This market configuration makes highly specialized knowledge and know-how regarding merchandise indispensable.

"Since our early days, we have scrupulously covered every corner of the market by assigning qualified personnel," President Ito emphasizes. "The functions and know-how we have built up in this way are at the root of our presence in the industry, and the human resources offering these intangible assets are our lifeline."

Rising awareness of the importance of disaster prevention is pushing demand from the civil engineering and construction industries, but we have also been aggressively involved in overseas business in anticipation of a fall in domestic demand. The members of the Nifast Group dealing in automotive fastener products in Shanghai, Hungary, India, North America (the U.S., Canada and Mexico) and Brazil share that strategy with Metal One. One aspect of this is loaning personnel, and overseas business development is undertaken in this context. Furthermore, we are temporarily transferring personnel to Metal One's business bases in Thailand and Indonesia in an unceasing effort to strengthen our overseas networks.
