Shanghai Jiari Precise Steel Sheet Products Co., Ltd.
Venerable Coil Center Continues to Expand Operations
New Plant Scheduled to Start Operations This Summer
Shanghai Jiari Precise Steel Sheet Products is located a little less than an hour’s drive to the northwest of downtown Shanghai, a huge metropolis with a population of more than 15 million. Established in 1994, the company began operations in 1995 and celebrated its 15th anniversary last year. It has more than 130 employees and is one of the oldest coil centers in eastern China. It began a new chapter in its history as a Metal One coil center in eastern China with the 2003 merger of Mitsubishi Corporation’s Shanghai Ziling Metal Corporation and the former Nissho Iwai’s Shanghai Jiari Precise Steel Sheet Products. It recorded approximately 140,000 tonnes in shipment volume in 2007, the highest amount ever.
Because the current plant will be moved and we are aiming to start up this summer, the new plant is now under construction, and we are extremely excited and overflowing with hope. The performance that we have honed during our 15-year history is trusted, and we are currently doing business with more than 100 customer firms.

Learning about China’s Drinking Culture
The banquet commences with a loud chant of “cheers!” Instead of kicking off with something simple, such as draft beer, it abruptly starts with a liquor called baijiu, which has an alcohol content of more than 50 proof. By the time the party’s atmosphere reaches its peak, the floor is littered with empty bottles. If you are not careful, your glass somehow ends up full of baijiu. Although there is no way I can keep up with them, I have a feeling that having fun together with them offers a glimpse into their regular lives.
I could not drink alcohol at all before I was posted to Shanghai, but now I am able to say, “I can drink a bit,” thanks to China’s drinking culture.
A Word about the Warmth of the Chinese
I would like to talk about two incidents that impressed me since I came to China.
The disparities between urban and rural areas have become a large issue in China, and Guizhou Province is said to be among those with a harsh living environment. Our company’s employees collected books and used clothing for donation to an elementary school in a rural village there. The picture above shows the village children who received the donated materials. The squares they are holding spell out “Thank you, Jiari.” Kind student volunteers went to the trouble of taking photos and sending them to us.
The second involves an incident in August when the Beijing Olympics were underway. I was watching the Japanese baseball team playing a game, and a young Chinese couple next to me was loudly cheering “Go Japan!” along with the Japanese cheerleading squad. Unfortunately, we ended up losing the game, but I could not help but thank them for cheering along with us.
The news tends to cover historical problems, food safety issues, and other things on the depressing side, but such heartwarming incidents as these encourage me to work hard in this country.
Capabilities of Shanghai Jiari Precise Steel Sheet Products
It is said that China’s economy is in a lull, but there is still no lack of latent demand for appliances, cars, and equipment and facilities.
China has been called “the factory of the world,” and for more than the past 10 years, companies from around the world have been investing here in eastern China and turning it into an extremely large market. The players who are active here have grown large in number, and market conditions are brisk. In the midst of this, I feel that the most important functions for trading companies like ours are to promptly and accurately grasp changes in the market and provide products and processing that customers need. I think that, along with serving as a source of useful information as an overseas Metal One investment affiliate, we need to continue to be as close to customers as possible so that they will rely on us.
