Nicometal Bajio, S.A. de C.V. (Mexico)
Service Center Began Automotive Steel Sheet Processing Operations in 2014
Seeking to Contribute to the Community and Expand Our Business
Nicometal Bajio, S.A. de C.V.—a service center located 220 kilometers to the northwest of the capital, Mexico City, in Guanajuato State's Amistad industrial park—began automotive steel sheet processing operations in January 2014. Mexico is strategically located geographically for meeting both North and South American demand, and is a member nation with several free trade agreements—including the OECD, NAFTA and TPP—and has low labor costs; it has attracted attention from car manufacturers and related companies, which have set up new operations here one after another. In 2014, Honda's second plant and a new Mazda plant—key customers for us—began operating in Mexico's central plateau region where we are located.
Additionally, along with Nissan's third plant, Toyota and other Japanese car manufacturers as well as Audi, Daimler, BMW and other foreign capital firms have plans to set up operations in the surrounding area. Expectations are that annual vehicle production in Mexico will exceed five million by 2020. Working together with Metal One group companies Nicometal Mexicana, S.A. de C.V. (which began operations in 1993), Coilplus Mexicana, S.A. de C.V. (which started up in 2011) and Nicometal Hidalgo, S.A. de C.V. (which began operations in 2013), we are striving daily to contribute to the community and expand our business in Mexico.

From Empty Lot to Company Launch

Car and automotive parts manufacturers are now clustered around the Mexican central plateau's Bajío region, which was originally a farm belt. I was posted here before car manufacturers started mass production operations, launching our sales efforts from a house that served as a temporary office. We added coworkers one by one, taking things from a vacant lot state to the company's launch. Outside our temporary office, new roads were built in the months that followed. New restaurants and hotels went up, giving rise in turn to employment, which raised living standards and brought life to the town as a whole. I think that seeing such contributions to the community with my own eyes while launching the company by sharing ideas together with the Mexican staff are the true pleasures of belonging to a trading company.

Lovely Cityscape and Majestic Natural Surroundings

The company's Japanese employees live in a city called Querétaro due to some safety concerns and our children's educational environment. Indigenous people lived in this area in the past, but the Spanish colonized it in the 1500s and it became a colonial town. The historic district has the lovely appearance of that time, and has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Although around a year has passed since the plant began operations, we still have a great number of issues to solve in both the office and plant before we reach the standards I have in mind. During the weekends, I drink tasty beer and tequila while viewing the majestic natural surroundings and pretty cityscape, contemplating those issues and recharging for tomorrow.
