Metal One UK Ltd.
London, City of Diversity
The city of London is said to be characterized by its diversity. The Metal One UK Ltd. office is no exception. Including the Japanese representatives, our sixteen company members come from ten countries—the UK, Slovakia, Hungary, Cyprus, France, Spain, Sri Lanka, Iran, the Philippines and Japan.
You notice many people that appear to come from countries other than the UK in town. Along with directly sensing the diversity, you have the feeling you can be yourself and not worry too much about those around you. There are also four seasons here, but the people do not change their attire all at once as in Japan. Rather, you see some people in down jackets while others are wearing t-shirts. There are also people whose appearance is distinctive, but nobody pays them much attention. It is okay to live according to your own preferred style.

Looking Forward to Summer's Arrival
This might apply to Europe as a whole, but I get the feeling that what most preoccupies people during the changing seasons might be the arrival of summer. Compared to around eight hours in midwinter in London, when the sun comes up at 8 a.m. and sets at around 4 p.m., the day is around sixteen hours long in midsummer. Summer is a fantastic season when it is dry and the greenery is also pretty. If you daydream, suddenly it's fall and then the long, severe winter is on the way. However, at such times you can head to the Mediterranean, which has splendid sunshine and is about two hours away by plane. In any case, people generally take all their paid leave in summer for a long, refreshing vacation because there are so few national holidays. It could be that the arrival of the short summer is an incentive for them all to work hard at their jobs. I am also getting a bit closer to the local sensibilities. As I write this article in January, my thoughts are turning to where I might go this summer.

The Greenhouse Effect and Wine
London also appears to be feeling the effects of global warming recently. When I started this job in 2013, Japanese living here advised me to take care of my health because summer that year was particularly hot. Newspapers and TV often reported on taking precautions against heat stroke last year as well. Although they used to say that France and Germany were the northernmost places where it was possible to produce fine quality wine, they have recently been able to make some in southern England. This might be due to the effects of global warming. The sparkling wine has received particularly good reviews and perhaps compares favorably to champagne. It can be purchased at a wine shop next to the office, and might be a good souvenir.

Sports to Follow This Year

London has many tourist attractions, and you can easily find World Heritage sites here. Watching world-class sporting events is another form of entertainment. Among these, the Rugby World Cup that will be held here in September is a focus of attention this year. I would like to say that everyone here in London is already fired up about the event, but unfortunately it has not reached that point yet. While hoping that the "Eddie Japan" squad representing Japan, led by coach Eddie Jones, will create a sensation, I will quietly get all fired up by myself.
