Dubai Office
Staff Members Always on the Road

The Dubai Office has a staff of thirteen people. Our main activities are to support the Tokyo headquarters with the sales of steel sheet and other products in the Middle East and Africa, as well as exports of steel pipe for the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), the world’s largest state-owned oil company. In collaboration with the Tokyo headquarters, we also promote new business development in the Middle East and Africa. Many staff members here spend more than half of the month on business trips, so we are all together for only about four or five days a month. Even so, we enjoy a family-like relationship through events such as year-end parties.
Moreover, along with ITECO Oilfield Supply Middle East FZCO—an oil well pipe supplier in which Metal One holds a 25 percent stake—we support sales to the Middle East, which is a huge energy supply center; Europe, where there is strong demand for clean energy such as geothermal; and Africa and Central Asia, where new energy development is expected to rise.

Dubai—An Event Superpower

The Middle East has a reputation for being hot all year round, but temperatures drop significantly in the winter, and some people even wear fur coats. Although temperatures exceed 50 degrees Celsius in the summer, and you can feel your skin burning even when walking to the next building, the winter is completely different. The city’s outdoor cafés are bustling, the parks and beaches overflow with people having barbecues, playing sports and sunbathing on weekends, and many other events take place. The event that closes out winter in Dubai is the Dubai World Cup, a horse race that has made Dubai famous worldwide. The Meydan Racecourse fills up with crowds of ladies and gentlemen wearing stylish hats. Last year two horses from Japan participated. While they ran hard, Prince Bishop, a horse owned by the Emir of Dubai, won the race and the audience went wild.

A Seemingly Never-Ending Construction Boom

Following the global financial crisis of 2008–09, the construction boom of high-rise buildings calmed down for a while in Dubai (before the crisis it was said that about 30 percent of the world’s construction machinery and cranes were located in Dubai). Construction demand in the city has revived in preparation for Expo 2020, however, and construction projects are now under way everywhere. Many different projects—including the expansion of subway lines, construction of a new airport, Legoland, a Hollywood theme park, the world’s largest Ferris wheel and hotels—are in progress. Construction on Universal Studios, suspended after the completion of the gates a few years ago, has also resumed, emphasizing a construction rush that will see Dubai change yet again as it acquires more and more new buildings.
