Metal One Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Iwao Toide) and JFE Steel Corporation (headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Eiji Hayashida) have jointly received an order for 280 tonnes of JFE-UHP-17CR-110 casing pipe from Brazil's state-operated oil company, Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras), for use in an offshore oil field development project in Brazil.
This is the first order for JFE-UHP-17CR-110, which is a highly corrosion-resistant seamless pipe. JFE Steel has completed manufacturing for this steel pipe order—for pipes 13.84 mm thick and with an external diameter of 9.625 inches (24.44 mm)—at its Chita Works, and the orders have been shipped.
The Petrobras project involves extracting oil from what is known as the "pre-salt" layers located 3,000 to 4,000 meters under the sea floor and below the halite layer, in an ocean basin off the Brazilian coast.
The pre-salt layer is a highly corrosive environment, and until now an ultra-premium-grade material known as duplex stainless steel has often been used because of its superior corrosion resistance.
JFE-UHP-17CR-110, which JFE Steel developed independently, has even better corrosion resistance than JFE-UHP-15CR corrosion-resistant steel pipe, which also has excellent strength and superior high-temperature resistance properties. Anticipated benefits include both lower costs and faster delivery times when compared to duplex stainless steel.
In addition, JFE Steel's newest JFELION special-purpose fasteners—which have distinctive seal geometry—will be used where the pipes intersect.
