Thai PM Shinawatra Awards Plaque to Metal One Thailand for Canal Cleanup Efforts

Metal One (Thailand) Co., Ltd.—the Thai subsidiary of Metal One Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Naoto Matsuoka)—received a commemorative plaque on September 17 from Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for its participation in the Thai People Keep Canals Clean campaign.

Metal One Thailand has engaged in CSR activities before, including efforts to protect sea turtles and plant mangroves. In this instance, bearing last fall’s devastating floods and preparedness in mind, 37 Metal One Thailand employees devoted several hours on September 30 to cleaning up Prawet Burirom canal in the Lat Krabang district, around 35 kilometers east of downtown Bangkok.

Besides collecting trash from the Prawet Burirom canal together with government representatives and regional residents, the day’s activities included a contest to promote better cleanliness among the residents of the adjacent Luang Prot Than Liam community. There were also explanations about organization, tidiness, cleaning, cleanliness, and good manners.

Following last autumn’s flooding, the Thai government mobilized the army to dredge 277 canals and improve drainage in adjacent areas. It also called on the private sector and community residents to help in the cleanup drive.

Prime Minister Shinawatra put the Ministry of Finance in charge of the Thai People Keep Canals Clean CSR project, and a launch ceremony for the initiative was held on August 17. The actual cleanup of the 277 canals was divided into two phases. Metal One Thailand was one of 64 companies that participated in the first phase. Coupled with the second phase, around 250 companies joined in the project.

On September 17, PM Shinawatra personally handed out commemorative plaques to the companies that participated in the first phase of the project. Almost all of these were Thai firms, but the group did include Metal One Thailand and four other Japanese corporations.

Metal One Thailand intends to continue pursuing various CSR initiatives.
